What to Wear on an African Safari

Dressing for your African Safari

If you are looking forward to an African safari vacation, you may be wondering exactly what items of apparel you need to pack. A safari is slightly different to most other kinds of vacation as you will need some specialist items of clothing - not least neutral colors to allow you to blend in with your surroundings. Mostly, the weather in African safari countries tends to be pleasantly sunny, dry and sometimes humid. Generally, rainfall is highest in April and May, whilst November and December can also see some rain. If your visit takes in any of the coastal parks and reserves, you can expect the weather to be slightly cooler and less humid thanks to the sea breeze.

Colors and Fabrics

Firstly, when packing for your African safari, you need to consider the type of bag you are planning to take. It's worth remembering that space is restricted in safari vehicles and in the light aircraft you may be travelling on. Also most airlines impose luggage restriction on travellers, so it may be worth leaving the suitcase at home and packing a strong but lightweight holdall or rucksack. It's also far more practical than carrying or wheeling a large suitcase! Once you've selected a bag to take on safari, it's time to think about what items to take with you. Mostly, safari apparel is neutral in color. So any shades of beige, stone, khaki, mushroom and brown is ideal. Avoiding brightly colored clothes will mean that you will be able to view the wildlife in its natural environment without distracting them with your eye-catching shirt! And steer clear of anything with a military or camouflage pattern. In some parts of Africa, it is unlawful for anyone except military personnel to wear these prints. Traditionally African safari apparel was made from cotton. These days, although cotton is still great for keeping you cool and dry, there are plenty of man-made technical fabrics available which are even better at keeping you feeling comfortable. Choose lightweight, non-crease fabrics which are more practical and very convenient. Most importantly, safari apparel needs to be comfortable, cool and casual.

Footwear and Outerwear for an African Safari

Safari vacations have a tendency to be rather active. Depending on which country and which parks and reserves you are visiting, you may be given the opportunity to take a safari on foot or by bicycle. Therefore a strong pair of walking shoes (or boots) and a pair of comfortable trainers are a must. Considering the hot, sunny weather you may encounter during the daytime on African safari, early mornings and evenings can be much cooler, so you will definitely need to take a jacket and a sweater or two. Pack wisely - choose lightweight items as those which 'double up', for example pants with zipper legs to convert into shorts. And, remember your wide-brimmed hat to keep you shaded: an essential for any African safari.
